XR standardization community
Standardization in XR
XRStand brings together researchers, industry and standards bodies to discuss interoperability, reproducibility and open science in XR. We run workshops, tutorials and panels at conferences such as IEEE ISMAR and IEEE VR. This site collects them all, together with papers, talks and recordings.

About
XRStand is an informal community, not an official body of any conference or standards organization. Our activities are organized through the standardization committees of the hosting conferences, so the organizers differ from event to event. See each event’s Committee link for who was involved.
How it started
Much of the conversation that led to XRStand traces back to the panel “xR is Dead, Long Live XR!” at IEEE ISMAR 2024 (October 23, 2024), facilitated by Kiyoshi Kiyokawa with panelists Mark Billinghurst, Takeshi Kurata, Missie Smith and Wolfgang Broll. The panel examined how terms such as VR, AR, MR and XR originated and are used today, and highlighted the need for shared terminology in the field. That question of common ground is what XRStand continues to explore.
The panel was part of the IEEE ISMAR 2024 program and was not organized by XRStand.
Contact
XRStand activities are currently coordinated by Takeshi Kurata (AIST) and Jen-Shuo Liu (Columbia University).
